SDPL Labs: The IDEA Lab Tech Team Internship

Our friends Monnee Tong and Uyen Tran at San Diego Public Library are the fearless teen (and tech!) advocates behind our series on the SDPL IDEA Lab.  Today, Uyen shares the killer internship program that helps promote the Lab. Enjoy! ~Erinn

What song do you like with this opening sequence? How do I draw someone’s finger pointing in Illustrator? Is it ‘GIF’ like gorilla or ‘GIF’ like giraffe?! These are some of the questions you might overhear when the IDEA Lab Tech Team Interns are busy collaborating on a project. From preparing a stop-motion animation workshop, to interviewing staff at the library for social media, to shooting footage of the Teen Center, they have produced a bevy of teen-approved workshops and projects that support and promote the IDEA Lab and San Diego Public Library. Here are some of the highlights of their work.

One of the Tech Team’s proudest accomplishments this year was a video they filmed and edited about teen services at San Diego Central Library. With the help of Media Arts Center San Diego instructor/filmmaker Jesse Keller, the interns learned basic filming skills (complete with a fun boom mic!) and how to edit using Adobe Premiere. Once it was completed, staff and teens were invited to a film screening during Teen Tech Week, in which the young filmmakers were available for Q and A.

Whenever possible, interns are encouraged to explore and pursue their personal interests for projects that support the library. As an example, intern Sierra loves photography, and in the spirit of the popular Humans of New York, took portraits of Central Library staff for a project titled Citizens of Central. Intern Zoe interviewed staff members, and documented highlights from those interviews in short sound bytes to accompany the portraits. A reception for this project will be held during the last week of school to celebrate its completion.
