This is a special TWO WEEK edition of the Linkubator Roundup… only because I was away from my computer last week. But still! It’s special, I tell you!
New features:
- This isn’t just a feature on a public art piece, it’s also a tutorial! Artist Elaine Luther shows us what she did at the Forest Park Public Library and how you can do it too!
- Hennepin County Library wanted to draw attention to all the publicly-accessible art at its many locations across the Twin Cities, so they created an online database AND a documentary. How cool is that?
- Any story timers out there doing transportation as a theme? Use The Bus is for Us! by Michael Rosen and get those kids up and moving! It’s this month’s Book to Boogie installment.
- A unique partnership in the UK is actually training select teens and librarians how to produce events at the library. Talk about getting teens involved!
- We’ve been revisiting some of our favorite features from the past lately, so make sure you check out the following: the Figure/Ground installation at Cleveland Public Library, “Unbinding the Library” at NYC’s Elastic City, the programs put on by Upstream Arts at Hennepin County Libraries, and the crazy beautiful paper artwork by Tom Bevan.
- OMG, you guys – Milwaukee Public Library showed off some of their amazing creations from their Book to Art Club meeting for The Night Circus, and author Erin Morgenstern chimed in on Twitter! So awesome!
- Are you following Programminglibrarian.org? You should be! Kaya Burgin from Westerville Public Library shared how her library hosted one of those Paint Nites that are so popular these days. Great stuff!
- My favorite thing all summer: someone at The Toast imagines what the pitch meeting for the TV show Wishbone must have been like.
- This presentation/essay has really been making the rounds: How to Destroy Special Collections with Social Media (definitely a tongue-in-cheek title). Good food for thought.
- If you find yourself in Pittsburgh anytime soon, you must visit The Mattress Factory, filled with fascinating art installations.
- Incredible art created with leftover coffee on leaves. You just have to see it.
- Find out how to submit your favorite book to become a LEGO set. I mean, it’s rare that they actually get manufactured, but you’ve gotta TRY!
- OldMapsOnline is a seriously hot tip from the Washington State Library – it collates maps from the USGS, the David Rumsey Collection, and more all in one place!
- The Fine Arts Library at the University of Texas at Austin crowdfunded for a new recording studio. Libraries, take note: this is a perfectly viable way to fund a makerspace!
- Whoa baby – the Walters Art Museum went Creative Commons Zero!
- Previously unknown Mark Twain stories uncovered at UC Berkeley – whaaaa??
- 10 Beautiful Books for Creative Thinkers. Want.
- And for your weekend reading, dig into How Creativity Works in the Brain, a new report from the National Endowment for the Arts about the links between arts, learning, and neuroscience.
