Inventions to Make Cardboard Construction Easier

I have come across two products that would make cardboard/recyclable construction creations (especially for younger kids) much easier without all that scotch tape, staples, and box cutters.

Strawbees securely connect to straws to allow them to move and build crazy contraptions. After watching the video, I was sold. The opportunities are endless: bridges, masks, even a lantern fish that actually works! They come in sets ranging from $20-$80 through their store with a $15 standard flat rate shipping. I bought the $40 box which includes 368 connector pieces.  Could I have printed out my own on a 3D printer? Possibly. I'll have to see when the kit comes in. We have LOTS of straws at the library that I discovered after cleaning the craft closet.  They could be left out on a makerspace cart for students to explore on their own time or built into an already designed program. This will be used in our Tinkering Tuesday STEM programs as well as our drop in building programs (which have integrated Lego club and STEM together by leaving out K-NEX, KEVA planks and other building materials in addition to Legos for wider appeal).  A case for strawbees is it could easily eliminate the need for building with food (think the marshmallow challenge, spaghetti challenge or toothpick challenges whatever you call them) while still learning design principles.

Makedo

The next one, shamefully, we have had in our craft closet for a while now and just rediscovered, Makedos. Makedo are "strawbees" for cardboard. Makedos also include tools like a safe cutter for cardboard (although a bit jagged finish). They got a makeover since we purchased them, with a new screw capability and a screwdriver tool.  The older models are being sold in kits on amazon or you can purchase the new screw kits through their store which range from $12.50-$480 as they are marketed to classrooms. They are also testing a free 3D printing gallery to make hinges and other items. Most of the programs I did this summer involving cardboard could have incorporated these. I could have had real working hinges on the car doors to swing shut in my Superhero Cardboard Drive In or "Lair" building project.

As part of the Global Cardboard Challenge, participants came together using Makedos to make a maze.  The challenge occurs every fall. It is set for October 10th this year, same as Star Wars Reads Day.

Imagine the possibilities together? Storm trooper cardboard costumes? Deathstar maze? Make your own Podracer? Then add electronics littleBits or arduino to make something light up or make noise? Say R2-D2 perhaps?

The one drawback to either of these items is what happens when the kids want to take their creations home? Based on the price, do we let them? If you had a ten kid program and gave them their own $12.50 Makedo kits it's only $125.00 for the entire program with the idea that kids could explore and create more at home. The alternative idea could be a $12.50 supply charge from the patron to fund the program. I'm going to say no for now but promise to display them somewhere prominently until I see sad faces that I cannot resist anyway.

Library Takeover: Plans become reality for youth-led cultural programs

Today we are so pleased to present this article (the second of two – read part one here) on the Library Takeover program, organized by Apples and Snakes, a performance poetry group based in the UK (check out their awesome library-based SPINE Festival work in our previous series). This program pairs youth who are interested in producing events at libraries with creative professional mentors who work in arts administration and production to organize large-scale cultural programs in libraries. Enjoy! ~Laura

“I now have an idea of what it takes to host an event from marketing, financing, contracting and negotiating” Library staff, Waltham Forest

Library Takeover is an ambitious new programme, presented in partnership by Apples and Snakes and Half Moon Theatre, along with Waltham Forest Libraries and Croydon Libraries. The project aims to inspire and equip a new wave of young people and library staff to produce live events and promote library buildings as creative and cultural spaces for all.

IMG_3563_LT2_1

The Library Takeover teams, made up of three young people aged 11-18 years and three library staff, have been working tirelessly in recent weeks to put together an exciting programme of creative events for the public, which will take place in October 2015. With less than a month to go, plans are really shaping up and the excitement from the Library Takeover participants is palpable.

“I have learnt how to speak to, interact and email people on a ‘professional’ and formal scale” Young person, Waltham Forest

Under the guidance of independent arts producer and facilitator Maeve O’Neill, the team in the borough of Waltham Forest have devised an open mic night aimed specifically at young people. On Saturday 24 October, Urban Explosion will take over the stage at the newly refurbished Leytonstone Library, showcasing the beautiful new spaces available to Waltham Forest residents. Hosted by a local spoken word artist and headlined by an incredible grime musician, the young people and library staff are harvesting the talents of the borough to produce what promises to be a truly explosive night of poetry, acting, rap, spoken word, singing, comedy, and even dancing! So whether you want to sit back and relax, or get up and take the open mic, this one-off night is really not to be missed! Find all the event details here.

Planning for upcoming programs as part of Library Takeover.

Planning for upcoming programs as part of Library Takeover.

“I found the budget difficult because maths isn’t my strong point” Young person, Croydon

The library staff and young people have taken on the challenges of producing live events with great enthusiasm, sharing the roles and responsibilities to ensure a smooth running process. Two of the staff at Leytonstone are looking after the finances and budget of the event, whilst one of the young people has taken on the task of organising the design and production of print materials, including flyers and posters. On the other side of things, participants are working together to organise the technical and logistical details of the event, and even planning a building makeover!

“It’s been really good to learn about different ways to plan things – go about organising something from the start” Library staff, Waltham Forest

Meanwhile, in Croydon led by Half Moon Associate Artist Lucy Foster the Library Takeover team are heading up an adventurous journey into fashion wonderland, planning a series of literary fashion show events under the title Wear the Book: Words Meet Fashion. Over the course of three free workshops at Thornton Heath Library, taking place on Saturday 10 October, Saturday 17 October, and Saturday 24th October, participants will get the chance to work alongside a professional fashion designer to create costumes for the catwalk, inspired by their favourite literary tales.

The big unveiling of the designs will take place at the main Wear the Book event on Thursday 29 October, hosted by the fantastic poet Francesca Beard, who will also perform on the night. The audience will be encouraged to explore the different library spaces where the budding young designers will be strutting their stuff on the fashion runway, accompanied by soundscapes and readings from the works that have inspired them. As Thornton Heath Library is usually closed on Thursdays, this is a literal Library Takeover! Find all the event details here.

“The best bits were when all the planning and preparation turned into the final idea, and designs. It became very real, and I got very excited!” Young person, Croydon

Library Takeover is an Apples and Snakes project in partnership with Half Moon Theatre, Waltham Forest Libraries and Croydon Libraries. It is funded by the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and Arts Council England. For more information about Library Takeover, visit the Apples and Snakes project page

The Grand Intimate: Public Art at Chapel Hill Public Library

A town with a public art mandate on town-financed building projects. A library with a big renovation. And an artist with a vision that drew on favorite childhood stories.  This fantastic project is one to bookmark! Enjoy– Erinn.

Grand-Intimate_1

by Daniel Siler, Marketing and Communications Manager, Chapel Hill Public Library

4BF84DA6-A060-485B-9B1F-8DCD697E04D1There’s an interesting wrinkle to living in Chapel Hill. Any town-financed construction requires the developer to set aside 1% of the total cost of the project for works of public art.

That applied to the Chapel Hill Public Library’s renovation in 2013. Out of more than 230 proposals for new art works to grace the library grounds, two imaginative projects were selected. The Grand Intimate is a grouping of four larger-than-life, hand-carved sculptures depicting animals commonly found in literature.

To welcome the Turtle, Rabbit, Snake, and Frog, the Library commissioned the artist and his wife to illustrate an all-ages coloring book (see a screenshot below), and partnered with a local wildlife rescue organization to have actual animals on-site, and made space for a hands-on sculpting exercise where kids could take a whack at the same limestone from which the sculptures are carved.

Screen shot 2015-09-28 at 7.50.11 PM

Grand-Intimate_3

The morning started with an animal-themed story time, and the whole community joined in a grand unveiling ceremony. Kids have been crawling all over them and reading on them ever since.

Grand-Intimate_2

  • Project name: The Grand Intimate
  • Artist: Todd Frahm, Stone Cloud Studios, Asheville, NC
  • Medium: Indiana limestone
  • Method: Tool-assisted carving
  • Cost: $40,000
  • Fun fact: Each sculpture weighs about 4,400 lbs

Find additional background on this project, you can visit the Chapel Hill Public Library website; the Library’s Flickr set also has more excellent photos of the whole project.

Board Game Night: Small World

Its that time again, first friday of the month! Board Game Night!

This Friday 2nd October starting from 6:3o pm the games we’ll be playing are Small World and Small World: UndergroundThis’ll be a family-friendly event, with the games recommended for ages 10 and above.

In Small World, players vie for conquest and control of a world that is simply too small to accommodate them all.

Designed by Philippe Keyaerts as a fantasy follow-up to his award-winning Vinci™, Small World is inhabited by a zany cast of characters such as dwarves, wizards, amazons, giants, orcs and even humans; who use their troops to occupy territory and conquer adjacent lands in order to push the other races off the face of the earth.

Picking the right combination from the 14 different fantasy races and 20 unique special powers, players rush to expand their empires – often at the expense of weaker neighbors. Yet they must also know when to push their own over-extended civilization into decline and ride a new one to victory!
