Today it’s our pleasure to share an Artist-in-Residence program with you! This one is hosted by the Appleton Public Library in Appleton, WI. Their two-month-long residencies encourage community engagement with the arts through public lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops. We’re excited to add this residency to our growing list of library-based artist residency programs! ~Laura
Special thanks to Elizabeth Eisen and Kristi Helmkamp, coordinators of the Artist-in-Residence program at Appleton Public Library, for submitting text and images for this feature.
The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program at Appleton Public Library was inaugurated in January of 2015. Artists from the Fox Valley in Wisconsin provide a two-month long residency period (January-February, March-April, etc.). The Friends of the Appleton Public Library fund residency stipends and supplies for AIR. Expectations of a residency include: installation of an exhibit or display, a lecture, a demonstration, and a workshop. The goal is to provide an enriching creative experience for our patrons.

This spring, the library hosted a Collective Collage Workshop with the May/June Artist-in-Residence Beth Servais. For the workshop, Beth provided an introduction to her collage work and gave attendees a brief tutorial relating to her technique. For the remainder of the workshop, everyone worked on individual collages and adding pieces to a group collage where Beth highlighted parts of the collage with paint. It became a night of collaborative experimentation as participants of all ages tried something new.
