We have a super fun event to preview today–the SPINE Festival, produced by Apples and Snakes, a UK performance poetry and spoken word collective, for libraries in several London boroughs. We’ll have a follow-up post about the festival in a couple of weeks! Thanks to Kaysha Woollery for working with us to spread the word about this event. ~Laura
This is it.
It’s here.
SPINE Festival is back for another year!
3 days. 14 boroughs. Endless creative ideas. Apples and Snakes are engaging children, young people and families in learning, literature, poetry, dance, music, play, theatre, and much more; firmly placing libraries at the heart of local communities. Launching on World Book Day, Thursday 3 March 2016, we’ve got an exciting mix of FREE workshops, events and activities to look forward to.
“A marvellous opportunity for nursery aged and school children, and families to enjoy and participate in a wide range of events from best selling authors to innovative drama and theatre performances, amazing poetry, and fascinating puppets.” Sarah Smith, Brent Libraries.
Step into a mad world of twisted fairy tales with Joseph Coelho’s Fairy Tales Gone Bad and let Half Moon Theatre take you on a music trip down Lullaby Lane. Learn to draw your favourite Manga character with animator Helen Piercy and Spin some tongue-teasing tricks with our wicked word wizards Francesca Beard, BREIS and Sef Townsend. Be star-struck by Guy Bass and finish off with an afternoon of art and crafty bits. And that’s not even half of it! Have a gander at our events page for a full programme of our workshops.
“This pioneering festival will give children and young people across London a wide range of exciting, creative events and activities to experience and explore” Nicky Crabb, Senior Associate – Libraries, Apples and Snakes.
There are endless choices, including some jam-packed workshops led by our Artists in Residence. Performance poet, writer and resident giant Paul Lyalls will be creating at Askew Road Library; you’ll find dancer and choreographer Annarita Mazzilli spinning some shapes at Leytonstone Library; filmmaker and animator Charlotte Bill will take budding Tim Burtons through the motions at Ealing Central Library; and poet and writer Aoife Mannix will be weaving some magical tales at Beckenham Library. If you look closely enough, you might also meet facilitator and Poet in Residence Rachel Long, roaming around for inspiration. Find out more about our resident superheroes on our Artists in Residence project page.
“I’m particularly pleased to be part of this year’s Spine Festival as it’s a great opportunity to reach out to young people and their families. As an artist in residence, what really excites me is discovering the communities I’m working with. I love to immerse myself in stories from the past and use them to inspire others to have a go at creative writing.” Writer, Poet and Author, Aoife Mannix, SPINE Festival 2016 Artist in Residence
We’re excited to be working in partnership with the boroughs of Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Harrow, Hounslow, Lewisham, Southwark, Sutton, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Waltham Forest and Westminster. We’re joining forces to encourage people to stand up and be heard, express themselves and love their local libraries; making them the cultural spine of their communities.
“It was very fun and made us have good cooperation and teamwork. I also liked listening to the performances.” SPINE Participant, 2015
