Fix Your Symbols

This Saturday I continued with the commissioning of my unified singing pumpkin controller. I got all the sub-systems working except for the power amplifier. In the picture above, on the left is the pumpkin controller. On the right is a (normal) Arduino amplifier shield using the same amp chip.  That shield works. If you look carefully you can see that the chip pins are mirrored between the two boards.

Mirroring pins is an innocent enough mistake. It happens to everyone once in a while. The problem is that I made the EXACT same mistake on the first round of that amplifier shield. (Notice the R2 on the right hand silk?) Apparently I fixed that problem manually without correcting my library symbol. That was many months ago and I forgot about it, thus resulting in a repeat of the same error on the unified pumpkin controller. Dumb mistake! It would have taken 10 mins at most to fix the symbol.

Don’t be like me, fix your symbols the moment you notice the mistake! You may not get back to it for a while and may not remember there was a problem.

Fixing TOG’s drill batteries

TOG’s drill batteries were on their last legs. We were barely getting a few minutes of use after a charge. Time for some new batteries. Two new batteries were almost the price of a new drill, so we looked at buying a brand new drill. There was nothing wrong with the old drill …. just that the batteries were bad.

After a bit of searching on the ‘net, a set of 12 new cells was on its way to TOG for just €15. The battery pack was opened up and the old cells removed. The new cells were fitted with the same layout. Lots of pics here. After reassembly, the battery charged fine and the drill is back in action. Just need to do the second battery now.

Featuring: Marla Martin

Today we hear from Marla Martin, who is a Teen Librarian who makes art on library due date cards as a way of engaging in art-making practice every day. Love this take on the art journal! ~Laura

Library as Incubator Project (LAIP): Please introduce yourself to our community – who are you, and what sort of work do you do (creative work, day job, etc.)?

Marla Martin (MM): I am Marla Martin and I work fulltime as Teen Librarian at the Woodbury Public Library in Connecticut. I have always been a creative person, and my job at the WPL has always allowed me to explore my creative side, form making crafts with the younger ones, to offering teen and adult artistic programming. Outside of the library, I mostly create collages and mosaics. My home is usually in a state of artistic chaos!

I started creating the art cards as a daily project to encourage my creativity based on an idea from a book , 365: A Daily Creativity Journal: Make Something Every Day and Change Your Life! by Noah Scalin. My sister, who lives in Massachusetts, also joined me in this daily venture. We started a blog, 365 Artful Days, and we contributed daily. The due date cards were a perfect canvas to work with; the size, while not too large to be overwhelming, was not so small that there was no space to work. The 365 day project lasted about 163 days – it was exhausting trying to work, to create art daily and maintain the level of energy needed, but we both created some surprisingly interesting things during that time, and almost 60 of the ones I created were the art cards.

Harper Lee art card, created by Marla Martin. 10,000 Leagues Under the Sea art card, created by Marla Martin. The Joy Luck Club, art card created by Marla Martin.

LAIP: How do you figure out how to assemble the collages for each book title–how do you start, and do the ideas usually come right away?

MM: I was surprised how quickly ideas for the cards came; my first was “Are You There Judy Blume, It’s Me, Marla” and it felt comfortable, and I was pleased that the idea transpired into an interesting little piece of art. Next came Harper Lee, and from there they just grew. Shakespeare, Sherman Alexie, the Flower Fairies, Walt Whitman, Rachel Carson (one of my favorite cards, her hair is made of tiny butterflies I cut out), Curious George, Alice Walker, so many books were in my head thanks to my job(!) that I didn’t need to think too much about the subject, just about design and color. My husband cut rectangles from old chestnut so I could mount and hang them (it was a difficult to figure out how to display them, and the pile kept growing!!).

Eric Carle art card, created by Marla Martin. Rachel Carson art card, created by Marla Martin. Brave New World art card, created by Marla Martin.

LAIP: What do you think it is about library ephemera (catalog cards, due date cards, etc.) that is so appealing to people especially when it comes to craft and art projects?

MM: I love library ephemera – I just look at old book cards and want to make something! I think the items elicit a nostalgia for the past, many people have such wonderful library stories to tell (maybe that will be my next series!) and date stamps, book cards, etc., open that conversation. When all the cards were displayed together people discussed art, library memories, and they discussed their favorite books and authors. It was wonderful.

LAIP: Do you find that your art work influences your library work, and vice versa?

MM: My job has always allowed me to tie my creativity into my work – I am very lucky!

On location at Harvard-Westlake Upper School Library

Today we have a cool resource to share with you courtesy of Shannon Acedo, Chair of the Library and Information Technology Department at Harvard-Westlake Upper School in Studio City, California. Many students at the school enjoy using the library as a location for filmmaking projects, so many that Shannon devised a library location form that she shares with us today.

Photo courtesy of Shannon Acedo. Photo courtesy of Shannon Acedo. Photo courtesy of Shannon Acedo.

Shannon writes, “The interest in filming here at HW is in part due to our location (we are in fact located in Studio City) and the fact that many of our community are in ‘The Business’ as the film industry is known here. Our Video Arts curriculum is a vital part of both our Visual Arts department and our Performing Arts department.

“I was [recently] approached by a student who is filming a short film and wanted to use the library as a location.  On the other side of the camera (as it were), I am very proud of our DVD collection (~1200 DVDs) that supports our Cinema Studies curriculum.”

Seeing as planning for this year’s event is in full swing, I figured it was time to start the countdown again. Yes, we are counting the days, and the Call for Makers is now open! Got a project, or something you made, or things you want to show off? Submit it, and share it with the world!

This Is the R2-D2 VW Bus You’re Looking for

VW Busses are a classic design in the US, and were produced in Brazil until 2014. Although I’m sure there are Americans jealous that such a late model bus is available there, some would probably prefer one that looks just like this amazing vinyl-wrapped R2D2 tribute! Husband and wife Cesar Aguzzoli […]

Watch this Artisan Create a Beautiful Acoustic Guitar

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 12.18.58 PMSurprisingly, David Lee of Lee Acoustics has only been building acoustic guitars for about a year and a half, yet his workmanship resembles that of a master luthier. All of his guitars are dreadnought style with beautiful wood finishes that tempt me to display them as art pieces almost as […]

Pages to Projects: Wild About Shapes

Our good friend Rebecca Dunn shares how to incorporate art education principles into storytime in her popular Pages to Projects series.  If you’ve been inspired by Rebecca’s projects or have used her storytime plans at your library, we’d love to hear about it!  Share your experience in the comments or on social media. ~Erinn

WIld About Shapes

by Rebecca Dunn

A favorite pastime of mine as a child was laying in the grass on a blue-sky day and watching the clouds morph into different animals. Wild About Shapes by Jérémie Fischer, a clever picture book that plays with color and shapes, reminds me of this this nostalgic childhood activity. With each turn of the page, animal silhouettes mysteriously appear, alternating between pages of brightly printed bold block colors and acetate pages.

Kids love interactive books and Wild About Shapes is no exception. The anticipation of turning each page, guessing what animals takes shape also serves as a fun tool to teach color theory and how a shape can quickly morph into something entirely different, something instantly alive.

Shape-shifting Collages

This shape-shifting collage project came to mind after reading Wild About Things, and am quite pleased with how it turned out as an extension activity. Here’s the how-to:

Materials

  •      Tissue Paper
  •      White thick paper (watercolor or construction paper will do the trick)
  •      Stick glue or liquid school glue
  •      Color overlays or color cellophane
  •      Masking tape
  •      Paintbrush (optional)

Wild About Shapes supplies

Depending on your age group, you can either cut a variety of shapes out of the tissue paper beforehand or leave blocks of tissue for the kids to cut out shapes on their own. Using glue sticks or white school glue and paintbrushes as the adhesive, invite the little artist(s) to create their own picture using tissue paper shapes on a white sheet of paper. The picture doesn’t have to resemble an animal, an object, or anything at all. Empower them to create using their imagination.

To add a little magic to the project, when a child is finished, tape a color overlay transparency or piece of color cellophane to their picture with masking tape. Depending on what color transparency the child selects as the overlay, it will mute the colors, or perhaps some shapes might disappear altogether. The collage could look completely altered. Flipping between the transparency and the original collage is an opportunity to image two entirely different depictions.

Shapes can be found anywhere- artwork, in the stories we read, and even in the clouds above. This book and project are a fun way to explore how shapes can reveal themselves if we look closely and use our imagination.
