Wouldn’t you know it, it’s May already! We’re sending out lots of positive thoughts to the academic librarians finishing up spring semester, the youth librarians prepping for summer reading, and all of our followers in whatever stage you’re in! Check out the best things we found online this week!
New features:
- NYPL’s Mid-Manhattan Library curates impressive work, including “Plastic Age” by Barbara Madsen. Rebecca Rubenstein interviewed Madsen about her work – we’re fascinated!
- We L.O.V.E. the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and now we get to share the collaboration between their library and art lab – the Fluxus Club! A must read.
- It’s that time again – time to explore movement and books in story time with this month’s Book to Boogie post: The Animal Boogie by Fred Penner. (AND it’s a song – how perfect!)
- Musician Dave Menzo recorded an album entirely in the Ann Arbor District Library, so of course we had to ask him about his experience. If you’ve done something similar, let us hear from you!
Other news:
- Laura wrote a post about the mobile makerspace that she shares in her library system on the Demco blog – it’s a great model to use for smaller libraries! Check it out!
- You may have realized by now that we at LAIP are complete nerds. We got pretty excited for Star Wars Day (May the Fourth… be with you), and so did you.
Fun stuff:
- You can now listen to Wikipedia being edited in real time, but as soothing, unscripted music.
- 3 Better Questions to Ask in User Interviews. Consider editing your patron surveys…
- So, the U.S. Geological Survey just launched a new online map viewer. Go forth and explore!
- Amazing – Iceland creates a human search engine through social media for questions the web can’t answer.
- Speaking of social media, MakerSpace is a beta version of a platform for makers to connect. Try it and let us know what you think!
- In honor of Star Wars Day, we were delighted to find out there’s a database to help you identify your Star Wars action figures.
- Podcasting on a Budget! We may be reading this article for ourselves…
- YOU CAN NOW EMBED NPR ON YOUR WEBSITE. This is just… this is very exciting.
- Edinburgh Collected is gathering the city’s digital memories. So cool.
- I love the idea of Mini Museums – does anyone have one at your library? Or something similar?
- This succinct blog post about Makerspaces from Designer Librarian is definitely worth a read.
