All Officers to the Bridge!

In preparation for our Artemis Simulator that’s going to be at Maker Faire Milwaukee, we’ve partnered with Betty Brinn Children’s Museum to build a realistic starship bridge. Here’s what we’ve got so far.

Starfleet never produced an episode of How It’s Made, so we’re going to have to do a little guessing along the way when building our bridge. Obviously we still need to install the EPS conduits, Tribble-proof everything, and get the self destruct system up and running. But we’ve got nearly 80 days to get it all done.

Don’t forget to bring your phaser to Maker Faire Milwaukee to check out the final build!

“The Challenge of Painting” at Mid-Manhattan Library: An interview with Susan Bee

Today, Rebecca Rubenstein interviews the artist behind of a new show at NYPL’s Mid-Manhattan Library, where artist and librarian Arezoo Moseni regularly curates shows of community artists.  Don’t miss Rebecca’s other posts on library-as-incubator happenings in the NYC area! ~Erinn

Susan Bee. “The Painter’s Triumph,” 2014. 22 x 28, Oil enamel and sand on linen.

by Rebecca Rubenstein

Susan Bee’s work brings a distinct style and pushes the boundaries of what a single painting can express through both a layering of ideas and physical texture on the canvas. I spoke to her about her practice and her connection to libraries. The Challenge of Painting is part of the the Mid-Manhattan Library’s Art Wall on Third exhibition series.

RR: Tell me more about what the title of your show, The Challenge of Painting means to you.

SB: My show at the Mid-Manhattan Library, The Challenge of Painting, features three oil and enamel paintings from 2014. These paintings highlight two related aspects of my work: my use of black and white film stills and my use of genre paintings from the 1800s. The keyed-up colors, energetic patterns, and painterly abstractions that also populate these pieces make them psychologically complex. The couples and characters depicted are nearly overwhelmed by tumultuous passages of paint that threaten to separate and engulf the figures. These works are full of tension as well as tenderness. From playful drips and floral patterns to stripes and thick brush strokes, these paintings address a wide range of human emotions. I’m interested in visual complexity, sensuality, dramatic tension, as well as humor. I use a variety of patterns, color palettes, and techniques in the spaces surrounding the figures and often on the costumes on the figures. The challenge is to create compositions appropriate for the content and mood of each painting.

Susan Bee. “The Kiss,” 2014. 24×20 inches, Oil and enamel on canvas.

RR: I am interested in how your artistic practice connects to your love of libraries. Please tell me more about this connection.

SB: Many of these paintings are based on movie stills, which I first came across when I came to the Picture Collection on the 3rd floor of the Mid-Manhattan Library in the early 1980s, looking for images of women boxers and fighters for a new series of paintings. This started me on a preoccupation with using black and white film stills for my oil paintings, which continues to the present day. I also used the Mid-Manhattan Library’s art book collection to research images for some of my artist’s books.
I am very grateful to the New York Public Library, as well for nourishing my insatiable need to read as the child of immigrants growing up in Yorkville on Lexington Ave and 85th street. There I was conveniently located between the 79th street and 96 local branches, where I went each week to take out children’s books.

RR: What have some of the highlights been for you in terms of your collaborations with poets?

SB: I have made fourteen artist’s books including many collaborations with poets. I made my first artist’s book, Photogram, in 1978. Painting is very different from making a book. My paintings are one of a kind. With the books, the form has been more open; I have designed the individual spreads than assembled the overall narrative structure. Each book project has been different from the next. What I like about the book form is that one doesn’t view it all at once like a painting– there instead is a gradual unfolding from one page to the next as the pages are turned. I also like the accessibility of the book form. Doing the books has expanded my vocabulary of images and approaches. I have used various forms such as: photography, drawing, watercolor, collage, and gouache in these books.

I have collaborated with writers including: Susan Howe, Charles Bernstein, Jerome Rothenberg, Regis Bonvicino, Rachel Levitsky, and Jerome McGann. My upcoming book from Litmus Press is Fabulas Feminae with Johanna Drucker. The images in these books touch on the humorous, whimsical, philosophic, and surreal underpinnings of the poems. Each page of the book presents my own interpretation of the poems. I am not interested in a strict illustrational approach to the words but rather an oblique associative relation between image and poem.

RR: Where can I find more of your work? Which books are available online?

SB: My website has a link to more paintings and to images from the books. Also, some of the limited edition books are in the rare book room of the New York Public Library.

Camp 2015 Ticket Shop is open now!

http://ift.tt/1ADB9WD

We all are very much looking forward to Camp 2015 – many things, like the new location makes things very exciting but such a new location also makes it very costly: We’ll need to get at least 950.000 EUR from ticket sales, which brings us down to an average ticket price of ~212 EUR.

We moved the Congress to the new venue in 2012 we have been facing the same issue ever since, remember?
There we didn’t want to raise the price above 100 EUR and here we don’t want to go above 200 EUR: We leave this, again, up to everyone of you to contribute as much as you can afford to – to make the Camp affordable for everyone in sum.

You can get:

  • Standard tickets for 220 EUR
  • Supporter tickets for 240, 260, 280 and 300 EUR
  • Business tickets for 450, 600 and 750 EUR
  • If you are on a low budget, there is the option to buy a ticket for 200 or even 180
  • As usual there is also the friends request available, so that everybody is able to attend.

We provide you in the ticket system a graph that shows the average ticket price and how far away we are from the 950.000 EUR. Please help us to create a nice graph! :)

Please be aware that there will be no ticket sale on site! So go ahead and get your ticket right now: http://ift.tt/1ADB9WD – if you have further questions please refer to our wikipage.

Shifting gears from Chicago Book Bike to the Read/Write BiblioTreka

This post was originally published in June 2013.

We’re welcoming Amanda Meeks back to the Incubator this week; today Amanda writes about one of the nicest pop-up programs I’ve ever seen – the Read/Write Library’s BiblioTreka (formerly known as the Chicago Book Bike)! ~ Laura

by Amanda Meeks

The BiblioTreka, packed up and ready to roll.

The BiblioTreka, packed up and ready to roll.

Chicago’s Read/Write Library collects every type of media from the area, now including a cargo bike with quite the track record of community engagement.  We’ve adopted the Chicago Book Bike in order to preserve it as a cultural artifact and Chicago icon as well as to further the mission of the library by using it to provide pop-up library and outreach services throughout the summer months.

In July of 2008, Gabriel Levinson began the Chicago Book Bike project.  His vision was to offer free new and used books to the general public because “everyone has the right to build and cherish a private library”.  Working with Haley Tricycles in Philadelphia, Gabriel collaborated to design the front-loading, cargo bike that would help him place thousands of books into the hands of Chicago community members over the next few years.  He took the Book Bike to parks and free events each weekend and the project became well-known and loved throughout the city.  When he relocated to Austin, TX last year he was disheartened to find that no individuals or organizations were able to keep the project rolling.  Thus, Book Bike came to a screeching halt.

Early this year, when I took on the role of outreach coordinator at the Read/Write Library, I suggested we look into acquiring a bicycle for pop-up library services.  Others became excited by the idea but there was one wrench in the works: Money–we’d need to fundraise a lot of it.  I started researching costs and options.  Using social media, I crowdsourced ideas from the bike community about custom-built bicycles in the area and many mentioned the Book Bike.  After connecting with Gabriel on twitter, inquiring how he started his project and explaining what we hoped to do with a bike at Read/Write, he generously offered to loan us the Book Bike since it had been unused since his move and was still stored in Chicago.

Setting up the BiblioTreka at a pop-up location in Chicago.

Setting up the BiblioTreka at a pop-up location in Chicago.

We’ve agreed to adopt the bike and return it to Gabriel should we stop using it for its intended purpose, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.  As of May 2013, the bike has been painted, tuned up, and renamed the Read/Write BiblioTreka.  We’re gearing up for a summer of pop-up libraries at local art and music venues (such as Comfort Station), farmer’s markets, community gardens, and any other free or low-cost community-oriented events by training a team of volunteers to safely drive BiblioTreka.  As with our traditional pop-up library services, we curate a sampling of our materials to match the needs of the events or organizations with whom we’re partnering, only we’ve put a new spin on the old model by arriving by bicycle.

BiblioTreka transformed into the pop-up library.

Updates about where the bike will be each week are available on the Read/Write Twitter and Facebook pages.  To inquire further about BiblioTreka and our pop-up services, please email outreach@readwritelibrary.org.

Read Amanda’s feature on Chicago’s Read/Write Library here on the Incubator Project.

Amanda Meeks is a recent graduate of Emporia State University’s SLIM program in Portland, OR and the Read/Write Library’s outreach coordinator.  For more information about the library, events, and volunteering please email her at outreach@readwritelibrary.org

MRMCD15: Wettkampfvorbereitungsupdate

Liebe Sportsfreunde,

It’s an annual show  covering “Hardware, Software & the Internet of Things.” We found it eye-opening, informative, and occasionally controversial. Here’s some of what we heard at this year’s show: Synthetic Biology Joichi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab, explained […]

Plan Your Travel for Camp 2015

The Chaos Communication Camp 2015 approaches with giant steps! Whelp, it’s high time for a round of basic information, so you can plan your journey accordingly.

The dates

Entrance at the Chaos Communication Camp 2011

  • If you’re part of a Village or as an individual, the earliest reasonable date of arrival will be August 8th. Before that, there won’t be any power, water or Mate supply and you’ll likely stand in the way.
  • Disassembly of the event will commence on the evening of August 17th. We need to clear the venue by August 20th.
  • We’re going to need lots of people for the teardown and cleanup. You can help out, more on that in the Wiki about volunteers at the Camp!

Motorized vehicles

Plan Your Travel for Camp 2015

Special announcements for motorized vehicles

  • Even during Camp construction time there will be little to no cars allowed at the site of the event. A special procedure will be announced at the entrance and can change from one hour to the next. Please prepare to unload your vehicles at the main entrance and relocate them to the parking lot for the duration of the event. Parking in front of the main entrance will be limited, so better gang up!
  • Caravans and Campervans will get their own designated area right next to the venue. Officially it’s outside the main Camp area, so you can move your Campervan for a shopping tour.
  • Trucks, Caravans, and Campervans may enter the venue if they’re an integral piece of your Village’s set-up. Those vehicles will need to be in place by August 12th and won’t be able to leave until the event came to a close, so please plan accordingly.

Rental tents and Village construction

Plan Your Travel for Camp 2015

Villages at Chaos Communication Camp 2011

  • If you or your Village rented a tent from our (already closed) tent rental service, we’ll likely have those set up on August 8th as well. Some tents might be set up some time later (after the weekend of 8/9 August), but still before August 13th.
  • Your Village will get its own staked out stretch of land! Build as compact as possible. Buffer overflows are usually bad, so please stay within that area to avoid reboots. You might also cooperate with similar villages for a joint space.

Tickets will be up for sale soon™, as well as more information on general infrastructure at the Camp 2015!

This Clockwork Carpenter Is Made from a Single 2×4

slower-automatonThis clockwork carpenter is an automaton, which is a self-operating machine that can be made out of different materials. Evidence of them dates back hundreds of years, and I’m always excited when I see a new one pop up. I’ve mostly seen them made out of paper, but it’s a real […]

New 3D Printer Uses Molten Glass

molten glassMicron 3DP, a maker of extruders for 3D printing, has been exploring an exciting new area: 3D Printing with glass. This exploration seems like a somewhat natural transition for the company. The “hot end” of the 3D printer is the part of the extruder assembly that literally melts the plastic […]

Friday Linkubator Roundup | June 19 – 25

ALA Annual in San Francisco is upon us! Check “other news” below to see where we’ll be, but for those of us who are left behind, these links will have to ease the longing.

Get inspired by Fluxus artworks in the exhibition Art Expanded, 1958–1978 before transforming the Art Lab into a Flux Production Shop installation.

Fluxus Club in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune Art Lab, December 4, 2014.

New features:

  • The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN invited the public into the museum library to explore the collection and make art – everything we love! Part 2 is up now, and you can read Part 1 here.
  • What would you do if you found a flipbook in the margins of a library book? Anton Hecht was part of The Flipbooks in Libraries project in Gateshead Libraries, which by the way was totally sanctioned by the librarians – nobody freak out!
  • We’re thrilled that the folks at The Hatchery (a website from the Glasgow School of Art) are back with another series! Check out this Micropages exhibit.

Other news:

  • If you’re at/going to ALA Annual, find out where we’ll be! Erinn is our ambassador this year, and she’s part of some dynamite sessions. Say hi if you see her!
  • Holly took part in the ILEAD USA conference this week and was tweeting great stuff about connecting libraries. Look for #ileadusa on Twitter!
  • Our friend Karen Jensen (of Teen Librarian Toolbox fame) published an e-book on Scrib about Music in Our Libraries, especially for teens, and we think you should know it exists. Hooray for more arts resources!
