Hatchery Highlights: Lanark Sculpture

The Glasgow School of Art Library has a wonderful website, called The Hatchery, where staff document the artists and artworks that have been inspired by physical and digital library resources. Once a month we’ll repost a Hatchery Highlight from the GSA website. Special thanks to Duncan Chappell at the GSA Library for working with us on this series! ~Laura

Reposted from The Hatchery at GSA Library:

As part of the Book Week Scotland 2012, the Scottish Book Trust devised a rather special treasure hunt in which book sculptures were hidden in several locations. The hunt culminated in the discovery of the final sculpture, inspired by and made from Alasdair Gray’s seminal Scottish novel Lanark, in the Glasgow School of Art’s famous Mackintosh Library. This beautiful paper sculpture was made by a mystery sculptor whose identity remains a secret. The same sculptor left a series of beautiful and anonymous sculptures around Edinburgh in 2011 – all of which celebrated the importance of libraries, words and ideas. All that is known about the sculptor is that she is female and that she believes passionately in the importance of libraries, books, words and ideas.
